Marc Ecko : Rutgers Collection

August 26, 2008 by Huazzy K Baby

The roots for Ecko’s current campaign go back to his days growing up in Lakewood. Even though he attended Rutgers University as a pharmacy major (following in his dad’s footsteps), the graffiti hustle was always part of Ecko’s life.

In his junior year at Rutgers, Ecko decided it was time to make a choice. Did he really need to battle through courses like organic chemistry when he was making thousands from his airbrushed creations being snapped up by super stars such as director Spike Lee and singers Michael Bivens and Ralph McDaniels?…

I grew up wearing a lot of Marc Ecko clothes but I never realized he was at one time a former student at Rutgers. This made me appreciate the brand a lot more. It’s pretty neat to think that a billionaire fashion icon once shared the same experiences as a lot of us Rutgers alums. He probably had a fat sandwich very late at night, complained about RU-screw, and walked the same campus as us. For those doubting his ties to Rutgers here’s a Marc Ecko quote from a chat he had w/ ESPN’s Sportsnation (when debating what to do w/ Barry Bonds’ record breaking HR ball). He was receiving suggestions as to what he should do with it.

Rob Giorgi NJ/LA: put the ball in a box, with a letter identifying it, bury it in the ground and tell no one where it is….let the people of 2130 AD decide what to do with it

SportsNation Marc Ecko: You’re not helping me in proving that Jersey guys aren’t crazy. It’s bad enough that I’m a crazy Jersey guy. My answer is: Go Rutgers!

Now Marc Ecko has released a super exclusive/limited collection of tees/hoodies/sweaters inspired by his time at Rutgers.

As you probably know, Marc Ecko started his business from his dorm room at Rutgers University in New Jersey.  To pay homage to his roots, he has created The Marc Ecko Rutgers Collection: edgy, street-inspired tops and jackets that reflect the culturally diverse life found on the campus of Rutgers University in New Jersey. read more at the shopecko blog.

Curious to see the line? Here’s a sneak peek.

Buzz on the web has it that the line is currently not available online.

However, check back often at their site shopecko.com and I’m sure it will be available shortly.

For those who are desperate to get their hands on them, word is they’re available at the Ecko store  in Woodbrige Mall (732-855-6802).

*Be advised that chances are they will be very expensive. However, I plan on supporting the Marc Ecko brand and purchasing an item or two. It’s not often we are treated to such things.

Check out Marc Ecko’s officespace in NYC

Amazing. I say Marc Ecko should be hired as a design consultant to the new stadium upgrades. At least some sort of position within Mason Gross. Make it happen RU!

The basketball team visited the office earlier this year. Apparently it was a segment in “Inside Rutgers Basketball”. If anyone can find me the exact episode (and a link) I’d appreciate it.

Go Marc Ecko! Go RU!

Off Beat: Wayne Rooney a Rutgers fan?

June 6, 2008 by Huazzy K Baby

Rooney RU 01

Could it be possible that international football (soccer) superstar Wayne Rooney is a fan of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights?

Wayne Rooney has been vacationing in the islands of Ibiza prior to his pending wedding with longtime teenage sweetheart  Coleen McLoughlin. Wayne Rooney being a popular subject of the British tabloids has recently been photographed wearing not one, but two different Rutgers hats.

There are only two explanations one could come up with regarding his affinity towards his head gear.

1) Rooney is one of those individuals that likes to wear garments that are emblazoned with his initials. “R” for Rooney. However, I find it quite odd that he’d choose to carry around basically the same hat in different colors, to vacation nonetheless!

Rooney RU 022) With marketing contracts worth well over 92 million USD chances are he’s just sporting goods he gets for free given his lucrative contract with sports conglomerate Nike. Nike as you know is also a sponsor of Rutgers Athletic gear. Put the two and two together and you have Rooney sporting Rutgers gear.

Nonetheless, considering Rooney’s tremendous influence around the globe this is a very pleasant sight to see. Thanks to the British tabloids the “Block R” is going global. Greg Schiano’s desire for a simple logo representing Rutgers athletics is working like a charm. Apparently, superstar athletes find it worth wearing. Sign me up.

Non-football (soccer) fans might not find these pictures amusing but soccer fans, specially Rutgers soccer fans will love this. I do.

RU Hat

Lids carries a great selection of Rutgers caps/hats. You won’t find the two hats Wayne Rooney is wearing but you’re sure to find something that you will like to wear.
